2024/2025 Nordplus Estonia-Lithuania

Nordplus project: Digimath Pedagogy: Strategies for Integrating Digital Tools in
Mathematics Instruction 2024/2025 academic year
4 teachers participated in the project. The partner was Vinco Kudirkos Progymnasium
Project overview
The primary focus is to enrich teaching methodologies and explore innovative digital
solutions to make mathematics more student-centered in 8-11 grades. Recognizing the
significance of both technology driven approaches and traditional teaching methods. It is
also important to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts using
technology.
During the project, it was found that traditional mathematics instruction in both schools is
structured similarly. The lesson begins with the teacher’s introduction, and students use
textbooks and workbooks as learning materials. In the 6-8th grade, both schools had so-
called formula notebooks, where students compiled essential mathematical knowledge.
The lessons were generally calm, but with the addition of technology, students became
more active and energetic, bringing more vibrancy and dynamism to the classroom.
During the integration of technology, it became clear that the most suitable subject for
cross-curricular collaboration is computer science. Lithuanian schools utilize e-textbook
platforms and a Scratch e-textbook, which helps students creatively apply the
knowledge acquired in mathematics lessons. In contrast, our school primarily relies on
traditional textbooks and workbooks, along with free online learning environments.
As part of the project, we introduced Lithuanian schools to various free educational
platforms, including LearningApps.org, Scratch.mit.edu, Moodle.edu.ee, QR Code in
Google Drive, ThatQuiz.org, Studium (Tera), and GeoGebra. Throughout the
discussions, we explored ways these platforms could be used from both the teacher's
and student's perspectives—ensuring that creating educational resources is not solely
the teacher’s responsibility, but also something students can contribute to during their
learning process. During project weeks, it is beneficial to incorporate visits to local
museums. In Lithuania, the Chocolate Museum is an excellent choice, while in Estonia,
the Ahhaa Science Center offers engaging and educational experiences.
Overall, these platforms were well received, and next year’s curriculum is set to
incorporate web-based tools that can be effectively used in classroom instruction. I
would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the participants and the school
management for their support in enabling us to take part in the initial Nordplus project.
We sincerely hope that this will be the first of many such projects, fostering further
collaborations with schools from other countries.
